As a part of its smart manufacturing initiatives, REPL intended to develop indigenous industrial automation capabilities to drive higher operational efficiencies, productivity, maximizing capacity utilization and making workplace safer and more team member friendly. A crossbar mechanism controlled with servo motors was employed as a solution to the problem. The jobholder mechanism also had various suction cups, which were used to pick and place the job pieces from on workstation/tool/die on to another to remove human intervention from the production line. A control panel was also provided to the mechanism to control the signals and the movement of the crossbar which was routed through a PLC for the desired effect to take place. Additionally, a scarp cutter was also added as a part of the tool eliminating the risk of accidents/injury.
